While Zonal architecture in cars today organizing electronic systems into zones, instead of having large number of discreet ECUs for each function, has shown benefits such as reducing wiring and weight, simplifying vehicle design as well as optimising BoM, these do not come free. In fact, Zonal architecture has largely traded simplicity in hardware design with increased complexity and design challenges in software - one that Automotive industry by and large is not familiar with but have to confront. We explore various challenges presented, discuss technology such as global determinism, E2E communications, as well as Network topology, silicon and IP support.
